The latest arena of competition among newsletter platforms centers on AI chatbots.

Amid fierce rivalry, services including Beehiiv, Substack, and Ghost compete for creators by adding capabilities such as social feeds, video tools, and podcast support. The platform that best fits into writers' everyday processes could prevail. Recently this involves smoother connections with ChatGPT and Claude.

Beehiiv shared exclusively with Business Insider that it will launch a fresh option on Tuesday for paying subscribers. The update lets users direct chatbots to handle publishing chores including generating meta descriptions for images, applying tags to posts, and adjusting newsletter page appearance via simple text instructions.

Beehiiv CEO Tyler Denk suggested these additional applications:

Requesting a chatbot to generate new Beehiiv story templates that match a writer's brand, drawn from their top-performing content
Creating an annual Beehiiv reader survey to better understand audience interests
Producing SEO-optimized titles and descriptions for a Beehiiv user's podcasts

The feature, developed through a model context protocol or MCP, builds on a prior option that lets writers import readership and performance data into AI platforms like Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity for routine reports and analysis.

Rival Substack is also trying out its own chatbot link, according to its CEO in comments last month.

Power users of AI may spend entire days inside Claude

Beehiiv designed its updated tools with writers like Jaan Juurikas in mind. He has placed AI at the core of his process for his electric-vehicle newsletter, EVwire.

Juurikas, who has built a list of roughly 14,000 subscribers, has trained Claude to research, outline, and organize pieces in his voice. The method has allowed him and his small team to double their output recently, he noted.

"It will produce a draft that is sometimes about 90 percent complete," Juurikas said of Claude. "When used effectively with AI and trained on your tone, it handles much of the demanding work."

Beehiiv, which also provides podcasting and webinar options, aims to succeed through strong product design and user experience instead of resisting the rise of large language models, Denk told Business Insider. Writers decide where they prefer to focus their effort, he added.

Brandon Smithwrick, another Beehiiv subscriber who authors the content-strategy newsletter Content to Commas, favors drafting in Notion. He relies on Beehiiv's MCP feature to produce reports on article readership and top-performing pieces. He directs the AI to rate articles with letter grades.

"I prefer not to hand over all my writing to Claude," he said, adding that his advantage in an AI-saturated space lies in generating fresh concepts.

Newsletter authors must balance AI-driven efficiency gains with the creation of distinctive material. Although dedicated AI enthusiasts could automate nearly every production step, including writing, through tools like Beehiiv's connector, this may not sustain paying readers.

"Creators will cease producing AI-generated material if it fails to connect," Denk said. "It must address a genuine consumer need, and the quality must hold up."

"Subscribers will ultimately decide with their attention and payments which creators they choose to back," he continued.
