Long-distance relationships bring their own set of difficulties. One major issue involves figuring out where to settle once partners decide to combine their lives.

The options usually come down to one person's location or the other's. My husband and I faced this dilemma until we discovered an alternative that seemed even stronger. We selected an entirely new and neutral city as our home.

Testing each other's original cities showed they were not the right fit

We first connected in 2018 in Vancouver, Canada, which is my hometown. He was visiting on a working holiday visa that was about to end, so he soon returned to Birmingham, England. After some time apart, I relocated to join him the next year, and we married in 2021.

I came to the UK ready to explore. Living overseas had always appealed to me, and I wanted to learn about his background. We viewed the move as a trial period without any commitment to stay long term.

Initially the experience felt exciting and fresh. I appreciated many aspects of life in the UK, including historic buildings, lively towns and peaceful villages, trends in style and sound, plus new connections. Birmingham also offered better affordability than Vancouver. Over time though, trips back to Canada brought on homesickness. I longed for the beaches, peaks, woodlands, mix of people, and relaxed vibe of Vancouver. It contrasted sharply with the industrial feel of Birmingham's pubs and waterways along with British customs.

My husband noticed my growing longing for home, yet we reached an impasse. He had liked Vancouver during his visits but did not see it as a place to return permanently. His reasoning was sound: high living costs and heavy work demands would leave little time to enjoy the outdoors, especially amid rising prices after the pandemic. I saw his perspective, yet my desire to return to Canada only grew stronger the longer we stayed.

A single journey then shifted our thinking completely.

A stop in another city opened our eyes to new possibilities

During a 2022 visit to Canada we spent time with relatives in Victoria. My husband had never been there before and immediately connected with the place. Similar to Vancouver it offers coastal access to nature, yet its smaller scale reduces stress and brings slightly lower expenses. By the end of that trip he proposed relocating there.

Victoria proved to be our ideal middle ground. It sits close enough in culture and location to Vancouver to keep me content, while the reduced costs and calmer rhythm appeal more to my husband. I now enjoy the West Coast way of life I value, which he has also come to appreciate, and we remain focused on our shared aims. A large British community in Victoria has eased his adjustment too, allowing him to catch football matches with familiar foods and build workplace friendships.

Selecting this middle location did not erase every feeling of compromise or guilt common in cross-border partnerships. At times I still regret the distance from his relatives and the challenges of regular visits. I also recognize there are cultural details he may never fully embrace, just as I experienced in the UK.

Even so the decision has improved things greatly. It has helped us steer clear of lingering resentment down the road. Given how homesick I became toward the end of our time in the UK, staying there indefinitely never felt right. Likewise his views on Vancouver made that option less suitable overall.

Our move to Victoria has leveled the situation. Both of us started over, which fosters more understanding as we rebuild careers, friendships, and daily routines. Above all we truly enjoy our new home and look forward to the life we are creating in the city we selected together.
