Have you caught yourself answering job messages after hours? Sadly, this situation affects countless individuals on a regular basis.

The growth of home-based roles, alongside market instability and staff reductions worldwide, has made it harder to define clear work periods.

Consequently, many people across Europe see their professional duties gradually invading their private moments.

A recent Eurofound analysis from June indicates that about one in five EU staff members receive work-related calls outside usual times several times per month, which boosts tension and supports nonstop availability norms.

This pattern also appears in the UK, where MyPerfectCV's Always-On Workforce Report 2026 shows over half of British staff handle tasks past their set hours daily.

After-hours outreach fuels workplace tension

Nearly 59% of European employees in the Eurofound poll noted frequent or near-constant stress on the job. The research tied repeated contacts beyond standard times directly to elevated stress reports.

In comparison, just 17% of those never reached outside hours described feeling stressed.

Likewise, a TUC review of UK Labour Force Survey data found around 3.5 million British workers, or one in eight, often put in unpaid extra time last year, equaling roughly 28.5 billion pounds or 33.3 billion euros in free labor.

Thus, the growing always-connected norm notably affects well-being and personal-professional boundaries.

Eurofound identified heavy task loads as the top cause of after-hours outreach in Europe.

Home-based staff especially found it tough to set limits and faced more extra hours, uneven timetables, and job tasks entering leisure periods, plus pressure to stay reachable at all times.

"Of staff with adjustable start and end times, 64% note outside-hours contact at least now and then, versus 49% with fixed timetables. A comparable trend shows by site: 63% of remote workers report such outreach, against 48% based only at company sites," the Eurofound poll noted.

The Always-On Workforce Report adds that 92% of UK staff find it hard to mentally disconnect on breaks, exceeding the European norm of 78%. Also, 88% feel uneasy or guilty when asking for time off.

A mix of operational, individual, and cultural elements blocks full disconnection, such as missing key updates, boss demands, job apps on devices, and worries about seeming dispensable.

How European nations address the issue

To better shield staff work-life balance, nations like France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Luxembourg have enacted laws, work rules, or office guidelines to curb after-hours outreach and protect rest rights.

These steps include legal disconnect rights, labor code updates, group pacts, and optional practice codes. The UK, however, lacks any dedicated legal disconnect rule.

Even with progress, putting rules into practice and enforcing them proves difficult. Country methods differ widely, leading to uneven rules across Europe. Firms also deal with entrenched always-connected office habits, while mixed setups, global ties, and multi-region groups complicate drawing firm lines between job and private time.

This holds especially for top leaders and flexible-schedule staff, whose positions often feature uneven hours, more independence, and work across zones. Hence, it becomes harder to know when availability is required versus when personal time starts.

In certain places, rules apply only to larger employers, so smaller firm workers may miss similar safeguards.

Concerns over backlash or seeming less dedicated can prompt staff to answer messages voluntarily outside hours, complicating efforts for real cultural shifts.
