Several quick-service and casual-dining brands are reducing their presence nationwide, with multiple operators scheduling fewer outlets for 2026.

Chains such as Wendy's, Papa John's, Pizza Hut and Red Robin have disclosed intentions to close sites during 2026.

These reductions follow difficult trading conditions for many operators, influenced by inflation, higher wages and shifting diner habits. Certain groups have introduced value offerings and new menu items to attract more visitors.

TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles noted that successful quick-service performance has stemmed less from value promotions and more from strong menu updates or effective marketing campaigns that draw customer response.

Multiple chains have confirmed upcoming closures for 2026, while others have already shut sites since January. Here is the current situation.

Wendy's announced in February that it would close as many as 350 domestic restaurants.

Wendy's stated in February that it planned to close about 5 to 6 percent of its US sites, equaling roughly 298 to 358 outlets, during the first half of the year due to falling sales and earnings.

Then-interim CEO Ken Cook explained that the priority was strengthening the base and setting up Wendy's for sustained future performance.

Jack in the Box is reported to be closing up to 100 locations.

Jack in the Box, operating since 1951 with more than 2,100 sites, offers items including curly fries, tacos, chicken sandwiches and milkshakes. The brand has faced recent challenges.

A spokesperson told Business Insider in March that 20 potential 2026 closures were discussed on the Q4 call, affecting corporate rather than franchise locations.
