At the time, I was unaware that her commitment to her patients would influence me profoundly. She assisted individuals facing hand mobility challenges in performing everyday activities like brushing teeth, getting dressed, and preparing meals.

She restored their functionality, and they would remark to me, "Your mom transformed my life." The satisfaction she derived from her profession inspired me to pursue a career in caregiving.

Fourteen years on, I am enrolled in a nursing master's program at Duke University. To finance my studies, I work with an agency called Careyaya, which hires young volunteers and students in similar situations.

I liken it to a ride-sharing service for families requiring eldercare. They access the platform, request their desired hours of companionship, and get paired with a vetted caregiver.

A mutually beneficial experience across generations

My compensation ranges from $18 to $26 per hour, yet the position offers far more than financial reward. It has enabled me to build significant bonds with seniors, an honor I deeply value.

John, one of my initial clients, was an ophthalmologist who retired at 94, two years prior to our meeting in spring 2024. He possessed a strong sense of curiosity, remained receptive, and generously imparted his knowledge and insights.

He expressed interest in discussing both his experiences and mine. It represented a beneficial exchange between generations, and notwithstanding our age gap, I regarded him as one of my closest friends.

Although not particularly religious, I would transport him to church services on Sundays, often followed by a meal together.

He experienced mild dementia, but our post-service discussions about the sermon were remarkably detailed and insightful, providing ongoing motivation.

We frequently engaged in card games such as Uno, conversing extensively in between. John occasionally showed slight restlessness due to his condition. Nevertheless, the agency provides training on redirecting attention to restore a state of calm. Utilizing Spotify to inquire about preferred music and playing it serves as an effective method.

Despite his ability to walk, I often assisted him to the bathroom. I prepared snacks for him and arranged his medication organizers.

The profound impact of my clients

It was gratifying to realize he valued my presence. Following his passing, his daughter forwarded me an extensive, touching email that brought me to tears.

I have since cared for additional clients who hold great significance for me. One is an 85-year-old successful writer who has journeyed globally. She deals with moderate mobility limitations, so part of my role involves elevating her legs and ensuring she utilizes her compression equipment.

We view classic films including "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Roman Holiday," and "Lawrence of Arabia." Hearing her analysis of the movies is truly enjoyable.

Aspiring to become a nurse practitioner

Another client is an 86-year-old former US ambassador to the Middle East who diligently documented his memoirs. We review the pages together, and I pose questions for clarification.

As our talks advance, it becomes apparent that he can maintain extended lines of reasoning, and his recall improves.

Engaging with seniors like these strongly motivates my goal to become a nurse practitioner. I have grown to appreciate the sense of mutual gratitude for the positive effects we have on each other.
