You have seen those TikTok clips about the aunt without children who jets around constantly. She always seems to be heading to an airport, carries plenty of cash, brings surprise gifts she did not have to purchase (while holding another new designer bag), and rarely knows her current time zone. That matches me exactly.

For years I fully leaned into that image. I would drop in for birthdays and holidays, agree to sweets every time (plus seconds), stir up some excitement, then return to my independent routine.

I believed I had the role figured out. Deliver treats. Purchase gifts. Arrive at gatherings with something enjoyable. Stay energetic and playful to spark laughter, then return the kids to their parents once the event ended. It felt like an ideal arrangement with all the enjoyment and little of the load.

Or so it seemed.

As the children grew, something unexpected hit me: I was not truly learning about them as they developed into individuals. I relied on their mothers for birthday ideas, or simply grabbed random toys hoping for a hit. I also missed seeing their real selves when they were not vying for notice or showing off skills. That led to the start of dedicated Auntie Emily Days.

Their day matches who they are

Instead of forcing connection into busy family events, I began arranging solo outings with each of the seven kids.

Ahead of time they suggest activities, and I make them happen. It can be simple like fondue and time at a cat cafe. Other times it involves more planning such as a bunk bed stay at a hotel and exploring New York City.

I go all out where possible, from skating at the rink and dinner at a favorite spot to a castle visit with a spa treat and coffee for another, or special field access for my nephew. Each leaves with a small keepsake from the day.

Still the schedule is secondary. What matters is giving each child hours focused only on their likes. They skip sharing with siblings or waiting in line. They feel noticed and valued without rivalry. That opened up sides of their characters I might have overlooked.

They act differently without the group

Although I knew their general traits, the one-on-one versions surprised me. Emma stays thankful and cool through every moment. Zoe turns any situation into humor and spots joy even in busy crowds. Jessica thinks logically yet shows her playful side away from her sisters. Jocelyn brings bold energy but reads situations well. JJ stays observant and asks smart questions after watching. Isabelle remains gentle and pleasant. Baby Isla shows early signs of a strong personality I look forward to knowing better.

Free from family around them, they share openly about school friends, private concerns, and upcoming excitements. I keep most details private unless help is needed, which sometimes helps shape gift choices. Kids reveal a lot when they sense full attention.

Real bonds grow outside big events

The biggest shift was not just what I learned but the trust that formed.

I am not a parent so no rules about sleep or screens apply. Yet I am more than the relative who visits occasionally with presents.

They learned our talks stay private unless support is required. They can mention a tough day without fear of instant reports to parents. This does not include hiding risks. It shows respect for their own experiences. That trust builds a foundation useful as they get older.

The lasting memories come from simple shares

Looking back, the highlights are rarely the big tickets. They include chatting over fries about a new joke or sibling antic. Or standing still on a ferry to view a landmark because it was on the list. Or getting honest takes on school and hobbies. Or seeing them gain confidence ordering food, which then happens at home too. Small talks or support from our time together often continue after we part.

For a while I thought skipping parenthood meant missing kids growing up. That was incorrect. I still watch their progress from a close but separate view. I celebrate wins, support interests, answer tough questions now and then, and return them home afterward. That fits the part I am meant to play.

Showing up means more than appearing

I miss some games and events and cannot attend every weekend. Yet the focused time with each child carries more impact than quick visits and hugs.

Setting aside those hours creates space that does not occur in daily family rush or my own schedule.

I will always be the fun aunt, but the goal shifted from just being present to truly engaging. I want them to recall someone who listened fully, asked real questions, and made room for their passions even if different from mine. Not only the person who said yes to extra cake (though that still happens too).
