Managing Three Simultaneous Roles

I began the program in 2025 and completed it this past March. I plan to remain in nursing while building a side business offering hair and nail services. I am currently preparing for my state licensing exams.

I hold CNA licenses in both Illinois and Missouri. More than ten years ago I earned additional certification as a medication technician, allowing me to administer medications, deliver insulin, and perform treatments.

I enjoy my position as a certified medication technician at the assisted living facility. Interacting with residents while distributing medication brings satisfaction, and conversations about their earlier lives add enjoyment to the work.

During cosmetology school the demands proved challenging because classes required 28 hours each week. My schedule ran from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Previously my facility shifts were from 3 p.m. to 11:15 p.m., so I adjusted to attend school in the evening, then work from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. while carrying study materials. Care for my grandfather followed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sleep was limited. Personal tasks and major school assignments were completed between Friday evening and Sunday evening.

The effort proved worthwhile because I maintained my academic progress, work hours, and caregiving duties. Completing the program confirmed the approach was successful.

With school finished I returned to evening shifts at the facility and resumed morning care for my grandfather.

The Financial Aspects of Caregiving

My mother and I cover between $250 and $300 monthly from personal funds for my grandfather's needs, such as food and hygiene supplies.

The state of Illinois compensates me for providing his care. I had considered the role earlier when my grandmother required assistance, though an external provider was selected at that time. Colleagues later shared their experiences caring for relatives with state payment, prompting me to explore suitable agencies and enrollment steps.

Compensation comes at a set rate from the state. Caregivers do not earn high wages because agencies receive a portion before paying workers. In Illinois the hourly rate is $18.30, though amounts vary by location and agency.

Some assume family caregiving involves minimal effort, yet that view is inaccurate. The responsibility carries stress because a caregiver holds accountability for another person's well-being and safety.
