In April 2025 I felt settled in my full-time role as a publishing associate until an uneasy sensation emerged that refused to fade.

One moment I was happily engaging with Netflix celebrities. Then my inner voice warned that issues loomed ahead. I could not pinpoint why yet the unease lingered until I took a bold step.

I resigned from my position. After submitting my notice the doubt vanished by the next morning.

Shock set in as I wondered if I had truly acted that way. Amid the surprise a report soon revealed that my previous employer was shutting down.

It might have seemed confirming. Still the outcome proved devastating. My instincts had proven accurate.

Even so I faced unemployment in a tough field. Thus I entered the pool of applicants hunting for opportunities.

The flawed employment landscape

Optimism faded once I saw applicants submitting to countless positions without responses. Hiring had stalled and phantom listings increased.

The standard approach to employment had failed. Since the usual route was blocked I chose to follow a less common path like the one Robert Frost described. Yet I lacked a clear plan.

I switched to viewing internship listings on a job site. An unpaid position appeared in book publishing the area where I aimed to advance.

I submitted an application without hesitation. Unexpectedly I received a reply. Following a task and two meetings the literary agency director inquired directly whether I truly wished to join.

I confirmed my interest. It was not about glamour but about rejoining an environment focused on shared achievements.

Thus at 31 I started as an intern.

Freelance work and temporary positions helped cover expenses.

Thirty marks the new twenty

The intern experience proved humbling. Age differences stood out sharply during meetings with colleagues a decade younger.

Still their approach impressed me. They expressed emotions freely. They posed questions without hesitation. They discussed pressures doubts and aspirations openly.

Hearing them at the agency revealed how cautious I had grown in professional settings. Their perspective influenced me. I sought similar openness.

Yet I questioned if it fit my circumstances. Though eager to explore and seek guidance time constraints applied. Once the internship concluded I could not resume studies like the others.

A proper position was essential and the setback remained evident.

Embracing a fresh perspective

Automatic declines and screening tools concerned me. Would the intern label deter reviewers. I targeted positions matching my prior background rather than basic entry roles.

Ultimately I applied lessons from my younger peers by staying receptive. I ceased anticipating criticism turned curiosity into bold action and pursued opportunities through nonstandard channels.

Conversations became the method.

My intern role supported outreach efforts. I reached out to 145 professionals in desired positions. Across about two months I held over 80 networking discussions. Participants showed real interest in my history unusual trajectory and proactive approach.

Roles reversed as I inquired about their experiences instead.

Near the internship close in 2026 several offers arrived. Notably none required formal applications.

Employers valued my distinct background and clear initiative.

I joined a supportive high-achieving group as a literary agent. A positive new chapter began.
