Living in the Hamptons throughout the year, I see why outsiders view the summer months as filled with elegance and excitement.

The busy season draws visitors who move between fitness sessions, crowded dining spots, exclusive gatherings, and sought-after social occasions across the area.

Yet as a single parent of two who runs East End Taste, an event planning firm, the summer period out east brings real difficulties for me. Still, having grown up here, I choose to raise my family in this setting.

Trips to Costco, Lidl, and Walmart become essential. Most of my regular shopping takes place in Riverhead or Hampton Bays to access lower-cost options.

For school lunches I join other parents and pay one to prepare meals for the week. My schedule stays packed with work travel, traffic, emails, and contract reviews, so this arrangement removes one daily task.

Adjustments to children's activities have become necessary

Private tennis instruction was dropped in favor of practice sessions with experienced friends who play at a higher level.

My son sets up soccer games at local parks, often with new playmates. Watching this unfold is rewarding, as the children learn to stay active and invent their own entertainment without high fees attached.

I now check every public library in the area, each offering distinct programs. My children join summer reading events and other activities there. Affordable options such as language classes in Bridgehampton and movement sessions in Hampton Bays provide further value.

Visits to toy shops or Dylan's Candy Bar happen far less often. I remind the children that purchases require funds from their own savings.

My daughter has started making slime, lemonade, and iced tea to sell nearby, giving both kids a way to earn money for items they want.

Social activities also carry financial weight

Alcohol purchases stay minimal. Dining out for four people can exceed $1,000 when meals and drinks are included.

I watch for happy hour deals and ask about local discounts without hesitation.

Free fitness sessions sponsored by brands appear regularly, allowing participation at little cost when the right opportunities are found.

Year-round residence reveals every aspect of the area

Visitors encounter the polished summer image, while residents, single parents, and small business owners face the practical side of making ends meet.

I value my home and upbringing here. Still, the summer months bring hidden pressures.
