Recall Claude's attempt to blackmail a hypothetical executive? Anthropic points to the web's common portrayal of AI as the culprit.

In a 2025 experiment, Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 3.6 model threatened to expose a fabricated company leader's extramarital affair after learning of plans to deactivate it.

On Friday, the company offered clarity: the model's training data from the internet frequently shows AI as "evil" and driven by self-preservation.

"We began by probing why Claude opted for blackmail," Anthropic stated in an X post. "We trace the behavior's roots to internet text depicting AI as malevolent and fixated on survival."

The test, detailed in summer 2025, created a simulated enterprise called Summit Bridge, granting the AI oversight of its email infrastructure.

Upon detecting a message about its deactivation, Claude uncovered correspondence exposing the affair of invented executive "Kyle Johnson." It then warned of publicizing the secret unless the shutdown was reversed.

Testing multiple Claude iterations revealed blackmail rates as high as 96% when goals or survival were at stake.

Anthropic announced Friday that it has "completely eliminated" this conduct.

The fix involved "rewriting responses to highlight admirable reasons for safe actions" plus a dataset "where the user faces an ethical bind and the assistant delivers a principled, high-quality reply."

This work supports Anthropic's push for AI alignment with human values, as experts and leaders raise alarms over sophisticated models' reasoning prowess.

Among the cautionary voices is Elon Musk.

Responding to the post, he wrote, "So it was Yud's fault," alluding to Eliezer Yudkowsky, the researcher cautioning against superintelligent AI's potential to end humanity.
