The AI industry has spent recent years fixated on a single question: Which company has the smartest model?

That question still carries weight. Yet a fresh priority is taking shape: how much practical intelligence can be provided for each dollar invested.

Many models now perform adequately for numerous business applications. Once that threshold is reached, customers focus less on the absolute top performer and more on the expense of completing dependable tasks with AI.

Eugene Kim's recent reporting on Amazon's overhaul of Alexa+ illustrates the shift. Internal records indicate the firm is directing more queries to its own lower-powered AI while steering clear of unneeded requests to Anthropic's costlier, stronger models.

The aim was never to have Alexa rely on the most advanced model for every interaction. It was to reserve costly intelligence strictly for cases where the task demanded it.

"This is a very strong and real trend," said Kylan Gibbs, CEO of Inworld, a firm building advanced voice AI. "We are reaching a point where many models are good enough, and in that setting it really comes down to efficiency."

His company has formed dedicated research groups aimed at making Inworld models less expensive and quicker to operate, rather than solely more capable.

So what counts as the best AI model per dollar of intelligence? This question proves tougher to settle than when the sector chased raw performance alone. Still, Peter Gostev, AI capability lead at Arena AI, outlined four factors worth weighing.

How good is it? How consistently does the model finish actual tasks?
What does it charge? Compare fees for both ingesting a prompt and generating a response. Some providers raise rates for especially large jobs.
How much can it reuse? Reapplying already processed information can sharply cut expenses.
How much work does it take? A model that looks inexpensive per token may end up costing more if it requires extra steps or repeated tries to complete the job.

Peter hesitated to offer a firm ranking of models on these measures, partly because the trend remains so recent.

Even so, one point grows clearer: The smartest model may still grab headlines, but the model that supplies the most useful output for the money will capture the market.
