Artificial intelligence is elevating standards for starting positions in the workforce, based on fresh research from PwC examining worldwide employment listings.

Companies in sectors heavily influenced by AI now seek candidates for beginner roles who possess abilities once reserved for more seasoned professionals, such as emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and the capacity to lead.

These insights stem from PwC's 2026 AI jobs barometer, published on June 15, after reviewing more than one billion job advertisements from around the world.

A review of 2.4 million entry-level positions in the United States indicated that roles with significant AI exposure are seven times as likely to mention traditionally senior skills compared to 2019 levels.

Abilities increasingly required from newer staff encompass motivational leadership, team building, management of people and stakeholders, oversight of processes, mentorship duties, and decisions informed by data analysis.

PwC classified a skill as traditionally senior when it showed up over 50 times in experienced non-entry-level postings with high AI exposure in 2019, yet appeared fewer than five times in comparable entry-level postings that year.

The report noted that many junior employees will avoid prolonged periods of routine and repetitive work, yet they must rapidly develop capabilities in leadership and strategic thinking to succeed.

AI systems now handle many repetitive and data-heavy duties that previously formed the core of junior professional tasks, leading to slower growth in entry-level recruitment overall.

PwC's analysis showed that entry-level jobs with high AI exposure have remained stagnant globally, while the firm itself plans to cut entry-level hiring by one third in the US over the coming three years.

Within the American market, the study highlighted that AI-exposed junior positions are not uniformly declining, as those with elevated skill requirements continue to expand.

Entry-level AI-exposed jobs that incorporated more than 10 traditionally senior skills expanded by 35 percent from 2019 to 2025, whereas similar roles without such additions declined by 10 percent.

This evolution in job demands is prompting organizations to revise their training and development approaches to support newer employees effectively.

PwC US launched an updated training program in February and cut the number of offices available for entry-level consultants from 72 down to 13 locations.

Effects from the pandemic isolation period along with AI-driven shifts in work have reduced opportunities for connection in learning and growth, particularly among younger staff, according to Yolanda Seals-Coffield, chief people and inclusion officer at PwC US.
