For much of my professional journey, I resided in or close to London amid its lively urban vibe. Numerous colleagues and friends centered their efforts on advancing their positions and boosting earnings.

My personal measure of achievement matched this outlook for years, yet in 2015, following extended corporate roles, I chose to pursue my passion by launching a modest chocolate venture.

Launching this new phase near a major hub offered clear advantages, including ready access to growth resources and a diverse culinary landscape.

Proximity to the city brought ample prospects alongside greater clamor and rivalry, which fueled stress for me even if it motivated others. I began longing for a calmer rhythm.

My husband shared this outlook, prompting talks about relocating to a cherished spot in Wales.

I worried about moving, but noticed immediate benefits

The COVID-19 pandemic and the halt of my face-to-face gatherings opened a chance to test a fresh setting. Discovering a charming historic home in a community of roughly 3,000 residents helped everything align.

Still, I felt uneasy about effects on my enterprise, particularly after leaving behind parts of my established network and clientele.

Shifting from London to rural Wales seemed ideal for my way of living, though it remained daunting as an entrepreneur. It turned out my concerns were unnecessary.

Soon I observed that many area owners preferred collaboration within the community over direct rivalry for resources and notice. For example, smaller shops and cafes here coordinate so their offerings enhance one another.

Apprehension about integrating as a newcomer without a storefront lingered, but it faded quickly after a casual chat with a cafe owner during a coffee run. She sought a high-end hot chocolate option and inquired about my line, resulting in her featuring one of my blends.

My mental health has improved, too

Joining a tight-knit group has proven deeply rewarding for someone who operates largely solo.

I encounter familiar faces in town daily or weekly, and it seems residents here prioritize regular conversations, unlike the brief greetings or short dog-walk exchanges common in a hectic commuter area.

Numerous small, routine pleasures arise from this location and subtly aid my work. The untamed, scenic surroundings bolster my well-being, vital for an independent operator.

Before, my residence sat near the din of a busy highway; now I emerge to birdsong and a gleaming river visible across the street.

Even glancing at sheep and soft hills from my window can brighten a demanding day.

Most importantly, leaving behind London's intense pace allowed me to value alternative approaches to living and working. I notice people pausing mid-morning for a river swim or small shops shutting for family time several days weekly.

Such observations underscore the value of balance between work and life.

There are some downsides, but I'm still glad I moved here

I avoid idealizing the situation, since drawbacks exist when living and operating in a small rural setting.

Public transport is scarcer, making local travel or trips elsewhere difficult without a vehicle.

From a business angle, reaching networking events or sessions proves tougher as they cluster in larger central spots. I often travel farther for workshops than before, which takes additional time away from daily operations.

While a rural town does not suit everyone, the gains from a supportive community in such a picturesque area stand out. My small business has gained from this shift, as have I personally.
