When my future husband Zach and I got engaged back in February 2015, our home was a one-bedroom rental in the San Francisco Bay Area that cost more than two thousand dollars each month.

Although both of us had relatives nearby and enjoyed the many attractions the region offered, searching for a condo or townhome quickly showed that prices would stretch our budget too far.

Any properties within reach sat so distant from our workplaces that daily commutes would have created constant stress.

While weighing these housing challenges, Zach received a promotion that required relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Following a brief visit, we chose to embrace the opportunity in a fresh location where purchasing a house and establishing roots seemed possible.

Career moves came first for years, yet family growth shifted our focus

By the time Zach and I married in January 2016, we had settled into a Charlotte residence located in a welcoming neighborhood filled with families.

New connections formed through local streets and professional circles, and we even joined a curling club that became the center of our leisure hours.

Initially everything felt positive as we appreciated the surroundings and league friendships. Later during a gathering at a neighbor's home, I shared with others that we hoped to begin raising children.

A nearby resident who had recently welcomed her second child noted that nearby relatives made the experience manageable.

This comment prompted reflection on how our own relatives lived across California, Texas, and Florida, leading me to realize that parental support would require another relocation.

Fortunately another advancement for Zach opened the door to return to California, landing us in Fresno roughly two hours from my mother and stepfather.

Proximity to my parents proved helpful initially, but after two years there and the arrival of two children we recognized the area did not suit our long-term vision.

Distance from additional relatives and acquaintances created isolation, while summer temperatures frequently climbed above one hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

The Bay Area remained financially out of reach with young children, so Zach explored further internal opportunities that might lead to a better location.

His following position brought us to Colleyville, Texas. Relatives lived elsewhere in the state yet none nearby, making community building difficult, and as our sons grew it became evident this spot also fell short.

Weather patterns proved unpredictable with intense summer heat, and despite a spacious yard mosquitoes made outdoor time unpleasant.

We also missed mountain pursuits such as camping and skiing that both Zach and I had enjoyed growing up and wished to pass along.

Therefore we planned one final relocation driven purely by personal goals.

Over nearly twelve months we compiled requirements that included milder weather, nearby mountains for outdoor recreation, lively urban access to arts and events, plus strong public schools.

The list was demanding, but we refused to move without confidence in the outcome.

Choosing a destination for ourselves finally delivered the right foundation

Drawing on our criteria and past travels we focused on Denver. Acquaintances existed in the region through work or personal ties, including my youngest sister who had recently relocated to Colorado.

The city had long been a topic of discussion between us, and a short exploratory visit verified it matched our vision, leaving only employment details unresolved.

While based in Texas I had launched a freelance writing venture that offered scheduling flexibility around the children yet produced uneven income due to its project nature.

Zach's position had long dictated our moves and supplied necessary stability, so any personal relocation required his role to support it.

After an honest discussion his employer approved remote work, allowing us to head to Denver within months.

Since arriving last summer we have felt more rooted than in any prior spot. A pedestrian-friendly neighborhood suits us well, new friendships are forming, and we now share skiing and hiking adventures with our children.

Weekends involve relaxed conversations with neighbors and outings to local sites alongside school friends, bringing greater enjoyment because the location finally fits.

Following multiple transitions it is satisfying to recognize we have located our permanent home.
