Upon finishing college in 2021, my sole focus was relocating overseas.

With a background in Spanish and communications, I had planned a full year studying in Seville, Spain, an opportunity anticipated for a long time.

The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted those plans in March 2020, but the desire to return never faded.

Securing a Fulbright award to instruct English in Madrid seemed like the perfect alignment of circumstances.

Certain aspects of Madrid appealed to me, yet integration proved difficult over time

In my initial year, I instructed at a university and facilitated a weekly discussion group for students in Afghanistan, many of them women lacking local educational access. This role ranked among the most rewarding elements of my time abroad.

Following that period, departure felt premature. I secured a remote position in tech public relations to extend my stay, though it required aligning with US time zones from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m.

Initially, the arrangement seemed justified by the chance to reside in Spain. I maintained friendships, preferred cafes, weekend habits, and neighborhood locations that provided comfort. Externally, full integration appeared complete.

Over the subsequent two years, the schedule began to take a toll. Friends pursued social events, personal interests, and steady patterns while I remained unavailable for evening commitments or volunteer efforts. My rhythm diverged from the surrounding environment, fostering a sense of separation.

Despite fluency in Spanish, I grew conscious that complete acceptance might remain elusive. An awareness persisted, both externally and internally, of entering a pre-existing social framework.

Forming connections differed from prior experiences. Some Spanish acquaintances included me in activities, but work constraints and longstanding group histories made sustained involvement challenging rather than occasional participation.

Life in Madrid highlighted how many bonds emphasized lasting commitment. Individuals nurtured ties expected to endure, and as an outsider who once envisioned permanence, I struggled to share that outlook.

Welcome existed, yet true belonging did not. Eventually, envisioning a lasting future there became difficult in the manner I desired.

Many expressed surprise at my choice to depart Madrid

Near the conclusion of my time abroad, I encountered someone with whom a lasting partnership seemed possible. This initially suggested remaining overseas.

When the relationship ended, honest reflection followed. Without that envisioned anchor, the mismatch with daily preferences became clear.

Reaching age 27 brought a heightened awareness of time. Approaching 30 prompted a desire for daily alignment rather than surface appeal alone.

The choice to leave Madrid for New York City, where a brief internship had occurred earlier, surprised those around me. Limited connections existed there, including one close friend and several acquaintances.

Fear of immediate regret and longing for Spain accompanied the move.

Shortly after settling in New York, noticeable shifts appeared

Departing Spain revealed the value of unplanned interactions. In New York, conversations with strangers arise readily, such as brief exchanges in stores or at local venues.

Establishing consistent habits also became feasible again after years of mismatched hours. Enrollment in hip-hop sessions, weekly pool games at a neighborhood bar, and recognition of regular faces during walks followed naturally.

Life finally matched personal intentions after an extended period.

Five months later, satisfaction with the transition remains strong. Madrid provided a life close to the original vision in many respects, yet it lacked full personal ownership.

Gratitude persists for the path that led to Madrid, alongside recognition of the moment to move forward. A new dream life is now underway.
