My parents health began to falter

In 2021 my father suffered a stroke. Though not paralyzed, he faced mobility limits that required a wheelchair. My mother served as his main caregiver.

In April 2023, while I worked from home, my mother suddenly collapsed. An undiagnosed heart condition had emerged. Her legs swelled rapidly. Both parents now needed paid professional care. I rented their house in 2022 so they could live with me full time.

Only two weeks before her death did we learn the full extent of her illness. She entered the ER in January 2024. Doctors could not predict whether she had weeks, months, or years remaining.

She had wisely arranged her retirement benefits so my father would continue receiving a monthly check. The amount fell from roughly $4,600 to $2,800 after she died, leaving a gap we had to fill.

In May 2025 my father lost the ability to speak

We rushed him to the hospital. He remained unresponsive for three weeks. My sister and I stayed at his bedside throughout. Gradually he regained awareness.

A daytime caregiver now bathes and feeds him at home, and another helper arrives each evening for the same tasks.

Fortunately the parents house carries no mortgage. My sisters home across the street has only a modest loan. After our mothers passing we felt overwhelmed. I asked my sister to move in so we could share the load. My father remains surrounded by family, and we are committed to keeping him out of a facility.

We brought in daytime caregiving support

The arrangement functions smoothly. We spend $480 monthly on a personal trainer and more than $3,000 on caregiving services, plus insurance premiums. We also take him to occasional sporting events, concerts, and films.

My father receives Social Security and my mothers government pension. I cover the shortfall. My brother and his wife often purchase groceries and supplies. My sister handles details such as scheduling an in-home barber.
