This September marks 10 years since my father passed away and I departed Florida, and the United States altogether. While leaving was hard at the time, I am now navigating a fresh wave of loss: the gradual fading of my bond with American life.

My connections to friends, relatives, and my childhood town have evolved, as has my sense of self. It is not a desire to move back, but an awareness that life at home moved forward without me.

I departed for overseas service at age 21

At 21 I left with a suitcase for Cameroon to complete two years with the Peace Corps. After that came four years in Costa Rica, a year of travel, two years in Belgium, and most recently another stretch of global travel.

Over the past decade I have rarely spent more than a few weeks stateside each year. What began as a work assignment and a wish to see the world has grown into a sense that I no longer match the culture of my birth country.

After three years abroad I recall my cousin joking that I knew none of the current radio hits or slang. Ten straight years away have only widened that social gap.

Visits home now feel unfamiliar

Last month, driving from the airport to my mother's house, the one I knew as a teen, I felt disoriented. New construction meant I did not recognize the route until I was nearly there.

Her neighborhood had added buildings, the art in my former room had changed, and she had ended a five-year relationship months earlier without mentioning it. I had no claim to be informed, yet the changes underscored my absence. I now feel like a guest in my own hometown.

I have changed as well. Showing my Italian partner the American snacks I once enjoyed, I notice ingredients I no longer consume. I have grown used to long, relaxed lunches, while my family often eats quick meals at their desks. Dinner feels more like a shared moment, yet conversation stays work-focused and phones keep buzzing.

Relatives were surprised when the cookies I baked were made from scratch rather than a mix, and that I devoted hours on a Sunday to preparing lunch. They were content with simple sandwiches.

Conversations with friends and relatives grow harder

I grasp few pop-culture nods and struggle to explain American sayings to my partner. I can discuss Vietnamese coffee or cycling habits in Ghent, yet I know little about football or award shows. At times I laugh at jokes I do not follow or adjust how I describe my interests to avoid seeming too different.

Childhood friends are now married with children and turn down offers to visit abroad. While losing touch happens with age, I sense my move overseas sped the process. Maintaining those bonds now requires flying back and simplifying my stories.

Many relatives focus on careers and homes, while I have never owned a car. I am also the only cousin without a spouse or children. I take pride in having visited more than 50 countries and adapting to new places, but those experiences rarely fit into everyday talk.

Personal milestones, such as wrestling with Italian while slipping into Spanish with in-laws or spotting the same rare flower across borders, matter more to me than job titles, yet work remains the first question people ask.

Even among family I sometimes feel out of place

When friends from other nations ask if movies or news reports reflect real American life, I often answer that I am unsure. My nationality stands out abroad through habits like heavy peanut-butter use or views on service, yet inside the country I feel like an impostor.

I expected this outsider feeling eventually, but not while strolling my old street or chatting with relatives. As I became someone new, the country I left was changing too.
