This fall has arrived slowly, but many are prepared for the comforting season ahead.

What better way to enjoy a favorite rom-com and cozy sweater than with a recipe from Ina Garten?

The Barefoot Contessa star has built her reputation on straightforward and satisfying meals. After preparing many of her dishes, I reviewed them to select several that suit this active time of year.

From a Bolognese ready in half an hour to a cake filled with seasonal flavors, these stand out as Garten's top fall options.

Ina Garten's breakfast sandwiches energize busy fall mornings.

Fall begins with a rush as work intensifies, school resumes, and holiday preparations start. A portable, protein-rich breakfast sandwich fits the need perfectly. Garten's version uses just five ingredients: English muffins, whole milk, avocado, bacon, cheddar cheese, and eggs prepared in the microwave.

The microwave eggs turn out creamy while the sandwich proves filling.

All elements in Garten's breakfast sandwich combine effectively. She suggests thick-cut applewood-smoked bacon for a crisp texture against the soft eggs. Avocado spread on the base adds taste and nutrition, and the sharp white cheddar brings a pleasant tang. For larger groups, cooking eggs on the stovetop saves time. This recipe also works well for teaching children independent breakfast prep or for quick dorm meals.

Preparing a large batch of Garten's homemade chicken stock has become a yearly fall habit.

After testing Garten's soup recipes, boxed stock felt insufficient. Though she often says store-bought is fine, she describes homemade chicken stock as liquid gold. Nothing on the market matches the depth or richness of homemade stock, which adds body and aroma to many meals. A simmering pot also creates a welcoming kitchen atmosphere. Her stock gains flavor from simmering three roasting chickens for hours with carrots, onions, celery, parsnips, garlic, and herbs.

The recipe yields enough stock for winter and serves as a base for many soups.

Garten's method produces nearly nine quarts that freeze well for up to six months. Favorite uses include her chicken pot pie soup for comfort, ravioli en brodo as a twist on noodle soup, and light Italian wedding soup. The stock also works for one-pot chicken and orzo on cool evenings.

Garten's chicken chili offers a lighter take on a hearty classic.

Garten served traditional chili for years at her Hamptons store before switching to chicken, which proved even more popular. The dish features red and yellow bell peppers, fresh basil, chili powder, cumin, and red pepper flakes. It is served with green onions, cheddar cheese, corn chips, and sour cream.

Friends described Garten's chicken chili as warm and cozy.

Tomatoes and spices create a rich broth with tender chicken pieces. It suits hosting since toppings can be set out separately for customization. A bowl also fits football Sundays perfectly.

Garten's weeknight Bolognese comes together in 30 minutes.

Pasta cravings often arise as temperatures drop, and this Bolognese suits the busy season. It uses ground sirloin, crushed tomatoes, heavy cream, Parmesan, and basil yet adapts easily with pantry items. Any ground meat works, and cream or basil can be omitted. Orecchiette is suggested but any dried pasta fits.

Family enjoyed Garten's quick Bolognese thoroughly.

Garten creates impressive flavor in a dish that usually simmers for hours. The rich sauce coats every bite of pasta shells, and grated Parmesan adds comfort. It ranked high among Barefoot Contessa pasta dishes.

For cheesy pasta with minimal cleanup, Garten's one-pot dish works well.

Rigatoni pairs with sausage and fennel plus onion, garlic, cream, and Parmesan. Everything cooks in one pot or Dutch oven, with dinner ready in an hour.

Garten calls this pasta one of her all-time go-to dinners.

The whole meal comes together in one pot and pleases everyone at the table. Its golden color and meaty sauce lift spirits, with depth from sweet sausage, salty cheese, and fennel bite.

Garten created her apple spice cake at the Barefoot Contessa store, like the chicken chili.

Cakes like this once sat on the bakery counter for whole or slice purchases. It is unfussy yet delicious and earthy, encouraging second helpings. The recipe uses Granny Smith apples, rum, raisins, pecans, sugar, and spices.
