As summer draws near, many people are beginning to plan their footwear selections for the months ahead.

With styles shifting rapidly, it can prove difficult to decide which options merit another season and which may soon appear outdated.

Business Insider consulted several stylists to pinpoint the shoe trends gaining traction right now. Here is what they shared.

Jelly shoes are making a comeback.

Wardrobe stylist and personal shopper Allie McKenna notes that jelly shoes, once favorites in the 1980s and 1990s, have returned in force.

Available as flat mules, sandals, or flip-flops, these flexible plastic designs appear in many forms.

Although they can cause feet to perspire, McKenna advises selecting pairs with cork soles that help manage moisture.

Sneakers are getting even slimmer.

Low-profile sneakers have held attention for some time, yet McKenna observes that newer models lean toward an even more refined shape this summer.

These versions rest close to the ground, feature minimal tread, and often echo vintage athletic designs.

Closed-toe clogs are sticking around.

Los Angeles-based stylist Cat Wright reports that closed-toe clog styles, such as Birkenstock-inspired models, continue to hold steady this year.

She explains that the shoes have expanded past casual settings and now appear regularly in daily ensembles.

Derby shoes will be a popular choice this summer.

McKenna highlights derby shoes as a fresh alternative for those seeking variety beyond standard summer options.

These slim lace-up flats, typically crafted from leather or suede, borrow from vintage menswear for an old-school touch.

Shorter heels are having a moment.

Several stylists consulted by Business Insider note rising interest in open- and peep-toe mules with lower heels.

Personal stylist Brenda Gonzalez, founder of Styled By B, adds that more structured shapes and block heels now feel especially timely.

Mary Jane sneakers are adding a more feminine twist to athletic shoes.

This season brings softer accents such as straps, mesh, and lace into sneaker designs. McKenna cites Mary Jane and ballerina-inspired styles as key examples.

"It is a really cute way to be comfortable and cute at the same time," the stylist told Business Insider.

On the other hand, traditional rubber flip-flops are out.

McKenna states that the classic flat rubber flip-flop has fallen out of favor, replaced by more refined versions.

She points to wedge thong sandals as one option gaining notice, offering a wedge sole and V-shaped strap that adds height while preserving a relaxed vibe.

Round-toed heels feel dated.

Gonzalez observes that round-toed shoes are starting to look less fresh.

She suggests trying almond- or square-toed alternatives instead, noting that this small change can refresh the overall appearance.

Gladiator sandals won't be popular this summer.

Both McKenna and Wright agree that overly strappy designs like gladiator sandals are losing appeal.

"Anything that is too strappy or laces up the leg is out," Wright told Business Insider.

Simpler shapes such as jelly sandals and peep-toe mules are stepping in to take their place.
